Fans of funky-ass bass music—pay attention! If you’re not familiar with him, it’s time to get to know Calgary-based producer Defunk. This groove maestro has no conception of genre—incorporating elements of dubstep, drum & bass, electro-swing/soul, and house—but he is always bringing the heat! His latest release, Back to the Funk is certainly no exception. Deftly mixing heavy bass and groovy dance beats with a rich collection of samples from jazz and funk to disco and hip-hop (and just about everything in between), Back to the Funk is proof positive that electronic music doesn’t need a genre to be great. In addition to the incredibly well-crafted beats, Defunk has a talent for incorporating instruments like the saxophone and guitar in all the right places. If you mashed together Pretty Lights, Big Gigantic, Griz, and Flume, the result would probably sound something like Defunk. Show some support and pick up the LP from Beatport. Also be sure to browse the rest of his Soundcloud page for some extra goodies. Turn it up and get the funk down!
